Ways to Avoid Clogged Toilets

Jul 6

Clogged toilets are not only gross, but they can also cause costly damages. Overstuffing the toilet or filling it with non-flush-able waste can lead to drain blockages and much worse! While many hygiene and cleaning products might say ‘flush-able,’ the only things that should go down the drain are human waste and toilet paper.

How do I determine what is and isn’t flush-able?

If you still aren’t convinced that wipes are not flush-able, you might want to try this test. Take two bowls of water and place toilet paper in one and a ‘flush-able’ wipe in the other. Swish the water around and let them sit for about an hour. When you return you will likely find that the toilet paper dissolved and the wipe is still whole. This is proof that the wipe isn’t, and will likely never be, flush-able.

Why is my toilet still clogging even though I am only flushing toilet paper?

Clogs can still occur even if toilet paper is all that goes down the drain. When you use too much toilet paper, it balls up, and only the outside layer dissolves, leaving the inside of your paper ball intact. This can cause a blockage that will eventually lead to an overflow. If you are using a lot of toilet paper, it might be a good idea to break it up into separate flushes.

Following these flushing tips should help ensure a clog-free summer. In addition to these tips, you should also pay attention to the flush itself. A weak flush often indicates a clog is starting to form in your drain, and it is best to address it immediately. Even when there isn’t a noticeable clog, you should plunge a slow flushing toilet to try and bring it back to life.
