Facts You Didn’t Know About Plumbing

Plumbing has been around for over 3,000 years and it still plays a pivotal role in our society. Everyone knows what a sink and toilet are, but there is so much more to the story that often goes untold. If you are looking to get your Ph.D. in plumbing or just want some more random trivia knowledge, these plumbing facts are sure to help.

A Long Time Ago

  • The Indus river civilizations developed their own primitive plumbing systems around the year 2,600 B.C
  • The Egyptians began laying copper piping around 3,000 years ago. Fast forward to today, and copper is still the most used material in modern plumbing systems.
  • The term ‘plumbing’ is derived from the Latin word ‘plumbum,” which means lead. This is likely due to the fact that many of the original roman pipes were made of the material. Good thing we have grown out of that.
  • In 1596, Sir John Harrington was credited with the invention of the flushable toilet. His toilet was installed for use by the Queen of England herself.

Modern Plumbing

  • Over 9,000 gallons of water is wasted annually while you wait for your shower to heat up.
  • A low flush toilet can save you up to 18,000 gallons of water per year.
  • Since 1963, more than 5.3 million miles of copper plumbing tube has been installed in U.S buildings. If you were to stretch that tubing out, it would wrap around the earth more than 200 times.

Fun Facts

  • The great Albert Einstein was named an honorary member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union after he voiced his affinity for plumbing.
  • Ozzy Osbourne was actually a plumbing apprentice before he started biting the heads off of bats.
  • Contrary to popular belief, no matter what hemisphere you reside in, the bowl still spins whichever way the water jets are pointing.
