How to Replace an Exterior Faucet Yourself

How to Replace an Exterior Faucet Yourself

Apr 11

Your outdoor faucets are ready to open back up for Spring and this means your car can finally get that wash it so desperately needs. But what happens when you go to rig the hose up and you notice a major leak in your spigot? You don’t want to waste all that water, but you’re not sure if replacing the spigot is worth it. Don’t fret, we’re here to give you a brief step-by-step on how to go about replacing that outdoor faucet.

  • The first step is going to be to shut off the water to the spigot or faucet you’re trying to replace– unless you like getting hit with water.
  • Once the water valve is off, take the hose or whatever you have connected off the faucet and let it flush out the excess water. Make sure you have a bucket nearby in case there is more water than you expected.
  • Remove any screws that might be holding the spigot in place. Once that is finished grab a pipe wrench to remove it from the pipe that is holding it in place. You might want help with this part so that your partner can help hold the pipe in place while you unscrew the faucet.
  • Wrap plumber’s tape around the threaded end of the new spigot pipe and start screwing it in the same way you unscrewed the existing pipe.
  • Open the water valve back up and run the faucet to make sure everything is going to plan. Hopefully, your reason for removing the old pipe was justified and water savings are in your near future.
